In 1997, the WNBA formed his first season, and Rebecca was assigned to the New York Liberty during assignments in the league the first player on January 22, 1997. The first season of Liberty fell to the Houston Comets in the WNBA Finals. Lobo suffered a setback in 1999, breaking the left anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in the first game of the season. In 1999 he was selected for the inaugural WNBA All-Star team but could not play due to injury.
